José Fernández (Flamenco guitarist)

Flamenco guitarist José Fernández
JOSÉ FERNÁNDEZ

José Fernández began playing in Granada at the age of 9 under José Carlos Zárate, later continuing with Ramón del Paso. He took his first steps with his father, José Fernández, a renowned flamenco singer, from whom he learned in depth the art of accompanying cante (flamenco song) and its history. At the same time, he expanded his training by accompanying dance and taking guitar courses with masters such as Gerardo Núñez, Manuel Silveria, Niño Seve and Miguel Ochando.

In 2009 he won 1st Prize for Flamenco Guitar at the Granada Provincial Council competition, and was a finalist in other contests such as the Manuel Cano Guitar Competition and the Ciudad de Jumilla International Guitar Competition. He has played at festivals all over Spain, notably in Murcia, Madrid, Seville and Córdoba.

He currently works at tablaos in the province such as “El Templo del Flamenco”, “La Alboreá” and “Jardines de Zoraya”, among others, where he accompanies artists such as Kiko Anaya, Luis de Luis, José Cortés “El Indio”, Sergio Gómez “El Colorao” and Iván Vallejo, to name just a few of the many artists he has worked with during his career.

He also teaches flamenco guitar professionally in all its forms (solo guitar and accompaniment for dance and song) and at all levels, at many schools, most notably “El Carmen de las Cuevas” and the “Reina Sofía Municipal Flamenco School”.

In 2020 he released his first album with his father, “Dos Gotas de Agua”. His new album, “Suspiros de la Alhambra”, offers a very personal vision of the flamenco guitar, bringing harmonies from other musical styles into the most traditional flamenco.
