Flamenco singer Sergio Gómez "El Colorao"
SERGIO GÓMEZ “EL COLORAO”

Sergio Gómez Delgado, a flamenco singer known professionally as Sergio El Colorao, was born in Granada on 2 February 1985. He has won three first prizes at the prestigious Cante de las Minas Festival, in 2007 and 2008, in the soleá, vidalita and farruca categories. His album “Como mi sangre”, released in February 2016, features collaborations with such leading artists as Pepe Habichuela, Antonio Canales, Jerónimo Maya, Manuel Parrilla and Dani de Morón, among others.

He took his first steps in flamenco under the guidance of his father, Antonio Gómez “El Colorao”. He belongs to a long family of Granada flamenco singers and guitarists known as “Los Coloraos”, from his father to his brothers, including his uncle José Gómez “El Colorao” and artists such as Rafaela Gómez, El Moreno, Raúl Mikey and Raquel “La Repompa” from Málaga. He is also related to the Habichuela family, which includes names such as Pepe Habichuela, Juan Habichuela, Antonio Carmona and Tía Marina Habichuela.

He first took to the stage at the early age of 6, accompanied by his brother on guitar. In the years that followed he performed at peñas (flamenco clubs) and festivals all over Andalusia alongside his father. At 10 he formed the group Oyana with other young talents from Granada’s flamenco scene. It was here that his curiosity for reviving forgotten flamenco styles first appeared, while he forged an innovative style of his own that gave him a brilliant personality as a singer. In those years he shared the bill with artists such as Remedios Amaya, Raimundo Amador, La Susi, Rebeca and Ecos del Rocío.

In 2000, in the show “Trasnoches Flamencos”, he shared the bill with Rafael Amargo and the group Losada. During his teenage years he continued his academic studies, which took him to university, although he had to leave to devote himself fully to his artistic career. From then on he was in demand with leading dancers such as Manolete, Fuensanta La Moneta, Adrián Sánchez, Lucía Guarnido, Juan Andrés Maya, Ana Calí and Juan Ramírez, among many others. With them he joined companies that took him to countries such as France, the Czech Republic, England, Panama and Russia.

In the late 2000s he combined trips abroad, competitions in which he won major awards and regular performances at the tablaos of Granada’s Sacromonte and Albayzín with intense musical creation, producing a large body of original songs, reinterpretations of traditional cantes and musical arrangements for shows. During this period he worked on pianist Sergio Pamies’s albums “Entre amigos” and “Borrachito”, and on the tour that took them to the Jazz en la Costa Festival and the Bilbao Jazz Festival. In summer 2009 he was invited to join “El 5 a las 5”, a show bringing together jazz, classical, Argentine tango, pop and flamenco musicians to create a musical world inspired by Lorca and his story.

In 2010 he performed at the Jerez Festival with Adrián Sánchez and received the Breakthrough Artist award at the ONCE Festival. In 2011 he took part in the documentary “A Cobitos”, a tribute to the singer Cobitos, and in the film “Verde” alongside Cristina Hoyos and Juan Antonio Jiménez, and toured the Czech Republic with Sergio Pamies’s second album, “Borrachito”. That same year he took part in the premieres of Ana Calí’s “De cobre y lunares”, Javier Martos’s “Amalgama” and Lucía Guarnido’s “Suma y sigue”. In 2012 he presented his own show, “20 para el Flamenco”, at the Sacromonte Caves Museum as part of the 2nd Festival de las Cuevas.

In 2013 he worked with pianist Jesús Hernández on his first album, “Camino Bojaira”, took part in Suhail Serghini’s show “Siryab-Caló”, fusing flamenco with Arabic music, and in Juan Andrés Maya’s “Homenaje”, which premiered at the Teatro Central in Seville. In 2014 he performed with the Ballet Flamenco Andaluz in “En Memoria del Cante” and in “Embrujo Flamenco” in Panama City with the dancer El Farru. In 2015 he took part in other shows such as Fuensanta La Moneta’s “Paso a paso”, Adrián Sánchez’s “Comienza una saga” and Lucía Guarnido’s “Al trasluz”.

In 2016 he completed the recording of his first album, released in February, featuring artists such as Antonio Canales, Pepe Habichuela, Manuel and Bernardo Parrilla, Dani de Morón, Jerónimo Maya and Antonio Serrano. Today he remains one of the great names of flamenco singing, appearing regularly on television and at various tablaos in Granada, while continuing to work on his music and upcoming albums.
